Residence Life - Husky Host Program

The Host Program is one of the premier student recruitment efforts at Tech. It is a cooperative program sponsored by the Division of Housing and Residential Life and the Admissions Office, and has proven to be one of the most effective (and fun) ways in which prospective students get to know the programs, academics, and services offered at Michigan Tech. Also, one of the best parts of the program has proven to be the student HOSTS which house and interact with the guests.

Your Role as a Husky Host
top
  • Meet the visiting student(s) when they arrive on campus.
  • House the visiting student(s) for a maximum of two nights during their stay at Michigan Tech.
  • Give the visiting student(s) a tour of the residence hall you live in so they have a feel for what it is like living on campus.
  • If possible, take the visiting student(s) to one or more of your classes to give them an idea of the academic side of Tech.
  • Introduce the visiting student(s) to others who live on your floor.
  • Eat a meal or two with the visiting student(s) while they are here. Visiting guests are provided with one meal ticket for each day they are here, up to a maximum of three meal tickets.
  • If there is a sporting event (football or hockey game, etc.) during the time you are hosting someone, take them to the game if your schedule permits. Free passes (V.I.P passes) are provided for you and your guest.
  • Any other activities you can think of which would make the visiting student(s) stay as enjoyable as possible.
  • As the time draws near for a visiting student's arrival, many different offices on campus become involved. Below is a brief summary of what happens prior to, during, and after a visit.
A Week Before the Guest Arrives
top
  • The Admissions Office notifies Housing and Residential Life that a prospective student will be visiting campus and will need housing.
  • Housing and Residential Life contacts Hosts until they find a Host (or Hosts) who are able to have the visiting student(s) stay in their room during their visit. The Admissions Office will not allow students to visit for more than two days, and no Hosts will be expected to house someone in their room for an entire weekend. For example, a visiting student cannot arrive late on a Friday, stay for the entire weekend, and leave on a Monday. In addition, Michigan Tech does not host prospective students during certain parts of the academic year. These included the week before finals each term, finals week each term, K-Day, Homecoming, Winter Carnival, and Commencement.
Three Days Before the Guest Arrives
top
  • Housing and Residential Life prepares the guest student folder which contains information the visiting student will need.
  • Housing and Residential Life sends a Guest Visit Information Form to the Michigan Tech Host(s) giving them particulars (name, date of arrival, approx. arrival time, departure date and approx. departure time, etc.) This way, you as a Host will be better prepared to share your knowledge, insight, etc. with your guest.
  • Housing and Residential Life sends a copy of the Hosting Notification Form to the Hall Office in the residence hall in which the guest will be staying. The Hall Office will notify the Facilities Department who in turn will make plans for delivering a mattress and bedding to the Host's room.
The Day Before the Guest Arrives
top
  • Housing and Residential Life will deliver the Guest Student Folder to the reception desk where the guest will be staying.
  • IF NEEDED, the Facilities Office personnel will deliver a mattress and bedding to the Host's room for the guest. If the Host is not home when the Facilities Office arrives (after 10 AM), they will leave the mattress and bedding in the Host's Room.
The Day the Guest Arrives
top
  • All guests will be encouraged to arrive AFTER 4 PM.
  • When the guest arrives, they will be stopping by the reception desk to pick up their Guest Student Folder. At this time, the reception desk staff will call the Host to inform them their guest has arrived.
  • The Host will come down to the reception desk, meet their guest, and escort the Guest to their room.
  • The Host will make sure the Guest knows where they have to be the next day, and will assist them in making sure they know where to go, etc.
  • If the Host is not home when the Guest arrives, the Guest will be asked to wait in the lobby area for the Host to return.
  • EVERY EFFORT WILL BE MADE TO LET HOSTS KNOW THE APPROX. TIME OF ARRIVAL OF THEIR GUESTS. FOR THIS REASON, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR HOSTS TO BE HOME WHEN THEIR GUESTS ARE DUE TO ARRIVE. EVERY EFFORT WILL BE MADE TO NOTIFY HOSTS OF CHANGES IN THE ARRIVAL TIME OF THEIR GUESTS.
They Day After the Guest Departs
top
  • IF NEEDED, Residence Hall Facilities personnel will remove the mattress and bedding from the Host's Room (after 10 AM) unless the Hosts are expecting another Guest that same day.
Why Should You Be a Host?
top
  • It's fun!
  • You get to meet a lot of people.
  • It makes for great resume material. Companies are looking to hire people (including engineers) with a lot of experience working and interacting with a broad range of people.
  • Prospective students learn the most from those who are already Michigan Tech students.
